Le terme vient du verbe anglais "to stoke" qui signifie "alimenter une chaudière" et s'écrit bien stoker sans c.


Un Stoker est un dispositif de chargement automatique du charbon dans le foyer d'une locomotive à vapeur.

Il fonctionne sur le principe d'une vis d'Archimède : une succession de vis entraînées de façon solidaire, l'une horizontale dans le sas à charbon du tender et les autres allant du seuil du tender au foyer de la locomotive, entraînent le charbon calibré à la demande.
