Sa tâche est d'effectuer des études scientifiques au sujet de l'importance des conflits et de la coopération pour la paix mondiale, dans le but de de contribuer à la compréhension des conditions nécessaires à la résolution pacifique des conflits internationaux et à une paix durable.
À travers ses recherches Sipri rend accessibles des informations sur le développement de l'armement, les dépenses militaires, la production et le marché de l'armement, le désarmement, les conflits, la prévention des conflits et la sécurité. Sipri expose le fruit de ses recherches dans des livres, des rapports de recherche ou par d'autres voies de publications comme le site internet de l'institution.
