Biographie

Né le 2 décembre 1915 à Winona (Mississippi), Roebuck "Pops" Staples est élevé dans une plantation où il entendra Charley Patton. Il commence à chanter et jouer de la guitare en 1931 avec les Golden Trumpets, un groupe de spirituals de Drew (Mississippi).

Il fonde The Staple Swingers (qui deviendra plus tard, The Staple Singers) avec ses 3 filles Cleotha (Cleo), Mavis et Yvonne. Ce n'est qu'à 78 ans qu'il enregistrera un disque solo grâce à Ry Cooder.
