En informatique, spool (de l'acronyme anglais Simultaneous peripheral operation on-line) est un fichier d'édition envoyé vers une imprimante. Il regroupe l'ensemble des ordres que le périphérique doit exécuter pour mener à bien l'impression d'un ou plusieurs documents.
Spooleur
Spooleur est un anglicisme qui désigne le programme se chargeant de mettre le spool dans un tampon. La confusion entre les notions de spool et de spooler est très répandue. Les impressions à sortir (spools) sont déposés dans un tampon ou file d'attente ; Le tampon permet de conserver les spools quand l'imprimante n'est pas disponible.
L'imprimante est un périphérique qui lit les ordres qu'on lui transmet dans un spool. Les ordres contenus dans ce spool peuvent être écrits dans différents langages (PCL, Postscript...). Un spool est un fichier qui peut être intercepté et lu avec un logiciel comme un éditeur de texte, ou un générateur de PDF par exemple.
Certains spools sont spécifiques à un système d'exploitation. C'est le cas pour les plate-formes iSeries - Power6 - AS/400. Dans ce cas, il est natif au système d'exploitation.
