- En 1822, la société de Manchester Sharp Bros. s'associe au brillant ingénieur Richard Roberts, donnant naissance à la société Sharp, Roberts.
- En 1833, Richard Roberts construit sa première locomotive , une 110 baptisée "Experiment" qui sera vendue au Liverpool and Manchester Railway l'année suivante.
- En 1838, la première commande à l'exportation est reçue pour le chemin de fer de Munich à Augsbourg.
- En 1843, Richard Roberts quitte l'entreprise , qui reprend son nom initial de Sharp Bros..
- En 1852, un nouvel associé est trouvé, avec Charles Patrick Stewart. C'est à cette époque que la société prend le nom de Sharp, Stewart.
- En 1888, la firme rachète la Clyde Locomotive Company de Glasgow, ce qui lui permet de se rendre maitre des ateliers Atlas Works.
- En 1903,, la Sharp-Stewart fusionnera avec
- la Neilson Reid and Company
- la Glasgow Locomotive Works (Dübs)
pour donner naissance à la North British locomotive company .
