De manière générale, le mot segmentation désigne l'action de segmenter, ou le fait d'être segmenté. En particulier, le mot est employé dans les domaine suivants :
- en mécanique automobile, la segmentation a pour fonction d'assurer l'étanchéité du piston dans le cylindre ;
- en biologie :
- la segmentation d'un œuf fécondé ;
- la segmentation correspond à la répétition d'unités plus ou moins altérées le long d'un axe de symétrie du corps ;
- en imagerie, la segmentation d'image est la division d'une image en zones homogènes afin de séparer les divers composants visibles et de les identifier ;
- en informatique :
- en sciences humaines, une segmentation est le découpage en sous ensembles homogènes significatifs et accessibles : marketing, management, finance, sociologie, démographie, anthropologie, etc ;
- en linguistique, la segmentation est l'identification des unités élémentaires (phonèmes, morphèmes, mots, etc).
- en anatomie, la segmentation hépatique.
- en Marketing la segmentation d'un marché désigne le fait de découper un marché en plusieurs sous-ensembles homogènes et distincts composés d'individus ayant des comportements communs.
