Créé en 2002 sous l’appellation SPoW pour Science Parks of Wallonia, le Réseau de parcs scientifiques wallons regroupe six parcs scientifiques et technologiques :
dont le but commun est de favoriser l’accueil d’entreprises wallonnes et étrangères tournées prioritairement vers les hautes technologies et les relations entreprises-universités.
S'étendant sur 557 hectares, les six membres de SPoW accueillent aujourd’hui 535 entreprises, dont 73 spin-offs, qui emploient environ 13500 personnes.
De par leur organisation et leurs liens spécifiques avec les universités et les centres de recherche, les Parcs scientifiques et technologiques wallons contribuent à dynamiser la compétitivité de la région en valorisant les produits de l’innovation issus des universités et des centres de recherches auprès de leurs entreprises.
Les sciences de la vie et les technologies de l’information sont les deux compétences transversales en termes de secteurs d’activités. Chacun des parcs se distingue toutefois des autres par un ou plusieurs autre(s) pôle(s) d’activité(s) propre(s), par exemple la chimie au Louvain-la-Neuve Science Park, la gestion de la qualité à CREALYS, l’électronique et le spatial au Sart Tilman, les nouveaux matériaux et l’engineering à Initialis et l’aéronautique et les arts graphiques à l’Aéropole.
