Il est lu par environ 100 000 personnes dans le monde. La plupart des messages sont incompréhensibles ou des chamailleries, ou même les deux; certains sont politisés et le reste est constitué de requêtes pour des informations et des questions basiques. Parfois, des informations nouvelles et précieuses sont postées dans ce newsgroup.
Des informations au sujet d'algorithmes secrets ont été postées sur sci.crypt, comme par exemple RC2, RC4 et Khufu et Khafre. D'autres chiffrements, plus douteux comme le chiffrement irakien et S-1 (prétendument Skipjack alors encore secret) ont également été publiés via ce média.
