Le San Francisco Tape Music Center est fondé en 1962 par les compositeurs Morton Subotnick et Ramon Sender comme « une institution culturelle à but non lucratif, permettant le développement de la musique utilisant des bandes magnétiques »[1]. Des compositeurs comme Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, et plus tard William Maginnis et Tony Martin ont pu bénéficier du centre.
Le SFTMC a débuté comme un studio d'enregistrement établi par le groupe d'improvisation Sonics au conservatoire de San Francisco. Sonics a été formé en 1961 par Oliveros et d'autres membres d'un séminaire de composition de Robert Erickson[2]
En 1967, le groupe accepte une bourse de 15 000$ pour rejoindre le Mills Center for Contemporary Music, avec Oliveros comme directeur, bien que le reste des compositeurs fondateurs quittent le groupe cette année.
