Nargis, de son vrai nom Fatima Rashid, est une actrice de cinéma indien née le 1er juin 1929. Sa mère, Jaddanbai, chanteuse, actrice et réalisatrice pionnière du cinéma indien, la fait débuter très jeune au cinéma (à 6 ans), dans Talashe Haq ; elle est alors créditée comme Baby Nargis.

Elle se révèle dans les films de Raj Kapoor (surtout Aag, Barsaat et Awaara) avec qui elle va entretenir une liaison passionnée et former un couple phare à l'écran. Elle arrive au sommet de sa carrière grâce au film Mother India de Mehboob Khan en 1956. C'est sur le tournage de ce film qu'elle rencontre celui qui va devenir son mari : la star indienne Sunil Dutt; ils auront un fils et deux filles. Le fils, Sanjay Dutt, est devenu lui aussi acteur.

Elle est morte le 3 mai 1981 et son mari en 2005.
