Rani Khanna est née en France d'une mère française et d'un père indien mais fut élevée à Londres.
Elle était peintre avant de poursuivre des études de cinéma en 1992 (London College of Communication, University of the Arts). Depuis, elle réalise des documentaires et films expérimentaux/installations vidéo et enseigne la production vidéo à Londres où elle vit.
Son dernier documentaire en date est un portrait du compositeur Gabriel Yared.
