Rakan était, dit la tradition, le seul disciple de Bouddha qui, n'ayant pas atteint la perfection, ne put jamais se consoler de la mort du maître et pleura sans cesse. Il est l'objet d'une grande vénération. Dans une grotte du temple sôtô Tôkô-ji (île de Kyushu), pas moins de 500 statues représentent le célèbre moine dans des attitudes différentes.
