Raetihi est une ville du centre de l'île du Nord de la Nouvelle-Zélande, dans la région de Manawatu-Wanganui[1]. Située à la croisée des State Highways 4 et 49, elle est à 11 km à l'ouest d'Ohakune. En 2001 le recensement y trouva 1 068 habitants, soit une diminution de 8,2 % (99 personnes) depuis le rencensement de 1996[2].

Aujourd'hui une petite ville rurale, Raetihi était un centre industriel mineur entre les années 1900 et 1950 de par ses scieries qui employaient la plupart des hommes de la région. L'agriculture devint par la suite plus importante, les vivres et l'élevage remplaçant peu à peu l'industrie forestière. Sa proximité au mont Ruapehu et les pistes de ski de celui-ci voit aujourd'hui le développement du tourisme dans la région.

Du 18 décembre 1917 au 1er janvier 1968 Raetihi était servie par la branche Raetihi de la ligne ferroviaire North Island Main Trunk. La gare est encore visible, mais déménagée de son ancien emplacement et exposée au Musée Waimarino[3]. Le musée tient un archive de documents et photographies de la région de Ruapehu, certains documents étant accessibles en ligne[4].
