Coton tige
Le coton tige est un bâtonnet garni à chaque extrémité d'une petite boule de coton. On peut utiliser le nom commun bâtonnet ouaté.
En Anglais : Cotton swabs ou cotton buds. L'inventeur du "cotton swab" est supposé être Leo Gerstenzang, en 1923.
- Alors que Léo Gerstenzang voit sa femme coller du coton sur un cure-dent pour nettoyer les oreilles de leur bébé, il eut l'idée de créer le tampon de coton ("Baby Gays") puis sa propre compagnie : la "Infant Novelty Company". En 1926 il en changea le nom pour Q-Tip Baby Gays et finit par le nommer "Q-tip".
Ces bâtonnets servent à débarrasser l'oreille de l'excès de cérumen qu'elle secrète. Ils doivent cependant n'être utilisés que dans le pavillon et non dans le conduit auditif, car le cérumen joue un rôle important et, surtout, le bâtonnet introduit dans le conduit pourrait causer une otite externe, et son usage intempestif provoque des réactions inflammatoires d'irritation, et parfois même, de façon accidentelle, des perforations tympaniques.
On parlera plutôt d'écouvillon pour désigner l'espèce de coton tige servant à prélever des échantillons biologiques en médecine.
