Le PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator, ou indicateur de pente d'approche) est un instrument aidant à effectuer une approche correcte (dans le plan vertical) sur un aérodrome ou un aéroport. Il est généralement situé sur le côté de la piste, environ 300 mètres après le début de celle-ci.
Le PAPI se trouve à droite de la piste.
Fonctionnement
Le PAPI est composé la plupart du temps de quatre lampes en ligne. Lorsque l'angle d'approche est correct, il y a deux lampes de couleur rouge, et deux blanches. Quand l'avion est trop bas, toutes les lampes deviennent rouges, et quand il est trop haut, elles passent au blanc.
Le VASI marche de la même manière, mais les lampes sont disposées différemment : deux devant, deux derrière.
