Pok-ta-pok

pok-ta-pok (ou Pokyah) en maya, tlachtli en aztèque, plus connu sous le nom de ulama ou ullama liztli en langage dérivé du nahuatl[1], était un sport des peuples de l'Amérique centrale précolombienne.

Apparu durant le second millénaire avant J.C., ce jeu de balle connait son apogée chez les Mayas de 900 à 1200. Il se pratiquait avec une petite balle de caoutchouc entre deux équipes (de 1 à 12 joueurs) sur un terrain généralement en forme de H, également nommé tlachtli par les Aztèques. Le plus vaste de ces courts est aujourd'hui celui de Chichen Itza : soixante-dix mètres par cent soixante huit. L'iconographie et quelques récits[2] présentent des joueurs se renvoyant la balle à coup de hanches ou de genoux, s'interdisant de la toucher avec les mains et les pieds. D'autres illustrations montrent des joueurs munis de bâtons. Il existe peu de descriptions historiques précises des règles de ce jeu qui faisait partie d'un rituel et qui était parfois accompagné de sacrifices. Le jeu fut ensuite repris par les Aztèques. C'est cette version que découvrirent les Conquistadors espagnols.

Certaines variantes de ce jeu sont encore pratiquées dans le nord-ouest du Mexique[3].
