Dans le monde francophone, le mot phototype peut avoir deux sens :

Le mot phototype désigne :

  • tout support photographique (négatif ou positif), visible et stable, obtenu après exposition et traitement d'une couche sensible (par opposition à l'image latente)[1] ;
  • et depuis la fin du XXe siècle : tout fichier numérique obtenu par appareil photographique (ou caméra) numérique.

Dans le domaine médical

permet de classer les individus selon la réaction de leur peau lors d'une exposition solaire. Il en existe six :

  • phototype I

réaction au soleil : ne bronze pas, attrape systématiquement des coups de soleil.
type : peau très claire, taches de rousseur, cheveux blonds ou roux

  • phototype II

réaction au soleil : bronze difficilement, attrape souvent des coups de soleil
type : peau très claire, cheveux blonds ou châtain, des taches de rousseur apparaissent au soleil, yeux clairs

  • phototype III

réaction au soleil : a parfois des coups de soleil, bronze progressivement
type : peau claire, cheveux blonds ou châtain

  • phototype IV

réaction au soleil : attrape peu de coups de soleil, bronze bien
type : peau mate, cheveux châtains ou bruns, yeux foncés

  • phototype V

réaction au soleil : a rarement des coups de soleil, bronze facilement
type : peau foncée, yeux foncés

  • phototype VI

réaction au soleil : peau foncée, n'a jamais de coups de soleil
type : peau noire

Les peaux claires ont besoin d'une protection plus élevée contre les UV que les peaux mates. Elles sont plus sensibles au soleil et ont plus de risque d'avoir un cancer de la peau. Les peaux foncées possèdent une plus grande quantité de mélanine qui filtre naturellement les UV. Connaître son phototype permet de choisir une crème solaire adaptée.
