La sixième béatitude (Matthieu 5:8) d'une bible en syriaque oriental (peshitta).

Une des plus anciennes versions connues du Nouveau Testament est écrite en syriaque (Bible dite peshitta ou peshittô, toujours en usage dans certaines églises orientales) datant du Ve siècle. Elle a été traduite a partir de la version grecque écrite en Koinè, la plus ancienne qui soit connue.

Cette version comporte cependant des omissions notamment dans l'Evangile de Luc (les versets 17 à 18 du chapitre 22) et dans les Actes des Apôtres (verset 37 chapitre 8 ; verset 34 chapitre 15 ; verset 29 chapitre 28).

Deux versions plus anciennes de la Peshitta ont été découvertes : à savoir la version "syriaque curetonienne" trouvée par William Cureton en 1842 en Égypte et qui daterait du Ve siècle ; et la version "syriaque palestinienne" sous la forme d'un palimpseste , découverte en 1892 dans la Bibliothèque du Monastère Sainte-Catherine du Sinaï et datant du IVe siècle.

Une controverse existe à propos de la langue originale du Nouveau Testament. Une partie des spécialistes pensent que la Bible grecque provient de la traduction de textes syriaques anterieurs. La majorité des spécialistes pensent que la première version écrite du Nouveau Testament a directement été rédigée en grec. À noter que, dans l'évangile de Marc, des mots et des expressions prononcés par Jésus sont en araméen. Jésus, qui s'adressait en araméen aux Galiléens, devait néanmoins enseigner en hébreu la langue de la Bible parlée à la synagogue comme au temple de Jérusalem.

Avec le grec, le latin et le copte, le syriaque est une langue par laquelle le christianisme s'est très tôt répandu au Moyen Orient.
