Le mot retraite désigne l'action de se retirer, il peut avoir plusieurs utilisations selon le contexte :
- En comptabilité, les engagements de retraite doivent être comptabilisés sous forme de provisions;
- Au sens militaire, une retraite est une opération par laquelle des forces se retirent, devant un ennemi plus fort (ou supposé tel), ou dans un contexte politique et social défavorable.
- « C'est dans la retraite qu'on perd les hommes » (Napoléon)
- Réussir une retraite en conservant sa capacité militaire est donc un succès rare, au point qu'on l'assimile souvent à une victoire.
- Au sens catholique, une retraite est une période où un individu se retire de ses activités habituelles et s'éloigne physiquement de son cadre de vie pour un temps de réflexion et de méditation. Ce peut être aussi le nom d'un type de maison religieuse située volontairement dans un lieu totalement isolé (Retraite passioniste).
