La ville a donné naissance à deux grandes gloires du sport néo-zélandais. Le premier est Peter Snell, athlète évoluant sur les distances du 800 mètres au Mile: il est triple champion olympique et a été détenteur de six records du monde.
Graham Mourie est un ancien joueur et ancien capitaine des Blacks qui évoluait au poste de flanker (ou troisième ligne aile).
Carl Hayman est lui aussi un ancien all-black qui évolue au poste de pilier droit et qui joue actuellement au Rugby Club Toulonnais (RCT).
