L'expression on the rocks désigne une forme de cocktail où l'alcool fort se boit pur avec des glaçons. Le plus connu de ces cocktails est le « whisky on the rocks ».
En général, les cocktails « on the rocks » sont réservés aux personnes qui désirent déguster et apprécier les saveurs d'un alcool, l'eau des glaçons modifie le goût, dilue l'alcool. Les glaçons n'ont en général pas d'autre but que de rafraîchir la boisson.
Une autre définition est donnée par certains spécialistes. "on the rocks" désignerait l'utilisation de petits galets congelés à la place des glaçons. Le but étant de rafraichir la boisson alcoolisée sans en modifier le goût sous l'effet d'une dilution par l'eau des glaçons.
