ORBit est un composant CORBA ORB. La version courante s'appelle ORBit2 ; la version correspondante de CORBA est V2.4. Il a été développé sous licence GPL.
ORBit2 et est utilisé comme middleware pour le projet GNOME.
Ouverture d'une session GNOME
Sur l'ouverture d'une session GNOME (c'est-à-dire après la saisie du login et du mot de passe), il y a création d'un répertoire (par exemple orbit-dupont), dans ce répertoire, il y a création de
- 2 fichiers (noms au format bonobo-activation-*)
- une vingtaine de fichiers de type socket (noms au format linc-xxxx-0-xxxxxxxxx)
