Le nœud descendant est le point de l'orbite d'un objet où il traverse l'écliptique depuis l'hémisphère céleste Nord vers l'hémisphère Sud. Les éclipses lunaires et solaires ne peuvent se produire que lorsque la Lune est à son nœud ascendant ou descendant.
La ligne des nœuds est l'intersection du plan orbital de l'objet avec l'écliptique, et relie les nœuds ascendants et descendants.
Dans l'Antiquité et au Moyen Âge, le nœud descendant de la Lune était appelé cauda Draconis. Cette notion est issue de l'astronomie perse où il était nommé gozihr dumb. Elle est toujours utilisée en Astrologie.
