Nootrope vient du mot grec signifiant "agissant sur l'esprit".
Depuis l'an 2000, plusieurs substances (p. ex. Rivastigmine, Galantamine) sont employées afin de retarder l'apparition de certains symptômes cognitifs dans la maladie d'Alzheimer.
Les nootropes sont des médicaments extraits de différentes sources telles que la plante Ginkgo biloba. Leur efficacité dans des maladies telles que la maladie d'Alzheimer n'est pas encore prouvée.
