Ningishzida est une divinité mésopotamienne liée au monde souterrain. En sumérien, son nom signifie « Seigneur du bon arbre (ou bois) ». C'est donc peut-être à l'origine un dieu de la végétation. Dans la mythologie sumérienne, il apparaît dans le mythe d'Adapa comme un des deux gardiens du palais céleste d'Anu, avec Dumuzi.
Du point de vue de la parenté divine, il est le fils de Ninazu, et sa parèdre est Geshtinanna, elle aussi une divinité agraire. Son animal-symbole est le dragon-bashmu, une sorte de serpent à cornes. Il était également associé à la constellation de l'Hydre.
