National Education Association

National Education Association

Fondée en 1857 sous le nom de National Teachers Association (NTA) et, la National Education Association (NEA), qui porte ce nom depuis 1870, est la première organisation syndicale des États-Unis avec 3,2 millions de membres[1],[2]. Elle regroupe les enseignants du secteur public, les professeurs en formation ou retraités, les personnels ouvriers. Dennis Van Roekel est son actuel président. Non-membre de l'AFL-CIO, le NEA est membre de l'Internationale de l'éducation.

Ligne politique

NEA a soutenu de nombreux combats dont :

  • 1912: NEA soutient le droit de vote des femmes
  • 1919: NEA members in New Jersey lead the way to the nation's first state pension; by 1945, every state had a pension plan in effect
  • 1941: NEA obtient des fonds supplémentaires pour les écoles proches des bases militaires
  • 1945: NEA soutient le G.I. Bill pour aider les soldats à reprendre leurs études
  • 1958: NEA obtient le vote du National Defense Education Act
  • 1964: NEA soutient le Civil Rights Act
  • 1966 : Fusion avec l'American Teachers Association, ancien National Association of Colored Teachers
  • 1968: NEA leads an effort to establish the Bilingual Education Act
  • 1974: NEA backs a case heard before the U.S. Supreme Court that proposes to make unlawful the firing of pregnant teachers or forced maternity leave
  • 1984: NEA fights for and wins passage of a federal retirement equity law that provides the means to end sex discrimination against women in retirement funds
  • 2000s: NEA has lobbied for changes to the ESEA/No Child Left Behind Law

Bien que se décrivant comme non partisan, le NEA a soutenu tous les candidats démocrates de Jimmy Carter à Barack Obama, mais a soutenu des candidats divers pour les élections dans chaque État.
