Mégasthènes
Mégasthénès (ou Mégasthènes, Megasthène), vers 340 av. J.-C. - 282 av. J.-C., naquit en Ionie, l'actuelle Turquie. Vers 300 av. J.-C., il fut envoyé en ambassade par Seleukos Nikator auprès du roi Chandragupta Maurya dont la cour se tenait à Pataliputra, l'actuelle Patna dans le Bihar. Il resta une dizaine d'années en Inde.
Il écrivit la relation de son séjour dans un ouvrage nommé Indika, en quatre volumes, qui a été perdu mais que l'on connaît par des passages auxquels font référence d'autres auteurs comme Arrien ou Diodore.
Mégasthénès fait mention dans son œuvre de la chaîne himalayenne, du Tibet et de Sri Lanka. Il décrit aussi les pratiques religieuses et le système des castes.
Indika était, durant l'Antiquité, une source importante de connaissances concernant le monde indien.
