L'avrocar fut un véhicule commandé par le gouvernement américain pour savoir s'il était possible de faire voler une soucoupe volante. Il s'avéra que l'engin ne pouvait dépasser les 30 centimètres de hauteur en vol et le pilote devait porter un masque pour éviter d'être étouffé par les brins d'herbes fauchés par le moteur. L'avrocar fut humoristiquement surnommé la meilleure tondeuse de l'année par certains magazines de l'époque. Le programme fut interrompu en 1961.
