L'amplexus est le nom donné à la technique d'accouplement des anoures (grenouilles et crapauds). Le mâle monte sur le dos de la femelle et s'accroche à elle avec ses pattes.

On distingue deux grands types d'amplexus :

  • l'amplexus lombaire (les pattes antérieures du mâle encerclent la taille de la femelle au niveau des vertèbres lombaires) ;
  • l'amplexus axillaire (les pattes du mâles agrippent la femelle sous les aisselles).

Au moment de la ponte, le mâle émet du sperme qui coule sur les œufs, ce qui les féconde. L'action mécanique des pattes du mâle sur la femelle participe en outre à l'expulsion des œufs.

Selon les espèces, l'amplexus peut durer de quelques minutes à quelques jours. C'est un « faux accouplement » car il est effectué sans pénétration du mâle dans la femelle.
