Le terme Kresy, qui signifie « périphérie » ou « frontière », a d'abord été utilisé pour définir la frontière orientale polonaise.
On emploie souvent en français le terme « Confins ».
Ce terme aussi fait référence à la frontière orientale de la République des Deux Nations. Au cours de la Deuxième République de Pologne, les Kresy furent l'équivalent de la frontière avec les terres à l'est de la ligne Curzon.
En septembre 1939, l'Union soviétique annexa les Kresy et les intégra dans les républiques soviétiques d'Ukraine et de Biélorussie (sauf la région de Wilno cédée à la Lituanie, elle-même bientôt transformée en république soviétique).
Cette situation a été confirmée après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Après l'éclatement de l'Union soviétique, ces territoires sont restés dans les frontières des 3 nouveaux pays indépendants : Biélorussie, Lituanie, Ukraine.
