Knyaz ou Kniaz est une appellation en langue slave, dénotant un rang de noblesse élevé. Il est d'usage de le traduire par prince ou duc, bien que la correspondance ne soit pas totalement exacte. L'étymologie peut être rapprochée avec le nom de roi (King en anglais, König en allemand, et Konung en scandinave), ou bien, elle peut être rapprochée aussi de Cnéz , ou cneaz, knez, kenéz un terme d'origine slave qui désigne un chef local. Toutefois Knyaz ne désigne pas forcément le titre le plus élevé (par exemple, voir le titre de Tsar, venant lui du latin Cæsar). Le seul titre officiel du Tsar, jusqu'à Ivan le Terrible est Veliki Kniaz, c'est-à-dire Grand- Prince ou Grand-Duc.
