Joyce Carol Oates, née le 16 juin 1938 à Lockport (État de New York). est une poétesse et romancière américaine.

Carrière

Elle a été élevée dans un milieu rural. Elle était très proche de sa grand-mère paternelle. Elle a commencé à écrire dès l'âge de quatorze ans.

Elle enseigne la littérature à l'Université de Princeton où elle vivait avec son époux Raymond Smith, décédé en février 2008. Il dirigeait une revue littéraire, l'Ontario Review.

Depuis 1964, elle publie des romans, des essais, des nouvelles, du théâtre et de la poésie. Au total plus de soixante-dix titres. Elle a aussi écrit plusieurs romans policiers sous les pseudonymes de Rosamond Smith et de Lauren Kelly. Elle s'intéresse également à la boxe.

Son roman Blonde, inspiré de la vie de Marilyn Monroe, publié pratiquement dans le monde entier, lui a valu les éloges unanimes de la critique internationale. Elle a figuré deux fois parmi les finalistes du Prix Nobel de littérature.
