Integral Fiber Unit

Integral Fiber Unit (« Unité de fibres intégrales ») est un appareil optique qui se place dans le plan focal d'un télescope, et qui permet d'obtenir en sortie des fibres optiques le flux lumineux provenant d'une toute petite partie du champ couvert par l'IFU.

L'avantage des IFU réside dans la possibilité de diriger le flux lumineux des fibres vers un spectrographe et ainsi d'obtenir des spectres d'une zone étendue, en gardant une très bonne résolution spatiale (ce que détruit habituellement l'utilisation d'un spectrographe normal).
