Hugh McDonald est né le 28 décembre 1950 à Philadelphie. Il commence à jouer de la basse dès l'adolescence, en essayant de suivre la musique des cd's qu'il écoute. Il admire beaucoup Paul McCartney. Ses parents l'encouragent à prendre des leçons.
Hugh est bassiste au sein de Bon Jovi. Il remplace Alec John Such fin 1994 pour l'enregistrement de These Days, bien que son histoire avec le groupe débute en 1983. Il commence à travailler aux studios Power Stations, dont le propriétaire n'est autre que Tony Bongiovi, le cousin de Jon Bon Jovi. On lui demande de jouer sur She Don't Want Me, une des premières démos de Jon, avant qu'il ne fonde Bon Jovi. Peu après il enregistre les parties de basse pour Runaway From Hell, en tant que membre du All Star Review Studio Band. Le lien avec Bon Jovi était fait.
Après le départ d'Alec John Such, Tico Torres a suggéré que Hugh le remplace définitivement mais il n'a jamais été considéré comme un membre à part entière. Il n'apparait ni dans les clips ni sur les photos du groupe ethnique pour le sexy time.
