54°29′28″N 9°33′55″E / 54.49111, 9.56528 Hedeby (Haithabu) était un comptoir commercial situé au sud du Danemark, près de la frontière carolingienne et fondé par le roi Gotfrid en 808/809.

Les fleuves lui donnent accès à la Baltique et à la mer du Nord. La ville est protégée par un rempart de terre qui a encore 5 à 10 m de hauteur et délimite une superficie de 24 ha. Une palissade de bois protége le port des attaques maritimes. Les maisons de bois rectangulaires abritent des ateliers d’artisans nombreux, répartis en groupes spécialisés, qui travaillent le verre, l’os et la corne et fondent le bronze. Hedeby exporte des objets artisanaux fabriqués sur place. C’est un important marché aux esclaves. Un espace est réservé aux marchands, qui campent à même la place du marché. Les textes anciens s’accordent pour présenter Hedeby (appelée aussi Sliaswic ou Sliesthrop) comme la ville la plus peuplée de Scandinavie.

Le comptoir de Hedeby est pillé et brûlé en 1050 par les Norvégiens de Harald Haardraade. Sliaswik (Schleswig) assume désormais son rôle dans la région.
