Cours supposé de la Sarasvati

La Ghaggar est une rivière saisonnière de l'Inde, qui n'est alimentée en eau qu'en période de mousson. Elle prend sa source dans les monts Shivalik en Himachal Pradesh et coule au travers de l'Haryana et du Panjâb vers le Rajasthan où elle disparaît dans les sables du désert du Thar.

Jusqu'à 2000 av. J.-C. - 1500 av. J.-C., le cours d'eau était bien plus important, recevant les eaux des rivières environnantes qui maintenant se jettent dans l'Indus, peut-être même celles de la Yamunâ, aujourd'hui affluent du Gange. Le lit à sec continue vers le Pakistan où la Ghaggar est connue sous le nom de Hakra.

De nombreux sites de la civilisation de la vallée de l'Indus ont été trouvés tout le long du lit du couple Ghaggar-Hakra, ce qui fait qu'on les identifie souvent au fleuve Sarasvatî des Veda.
