Narthex
Le narthex est l'entrée de l'église, un espace intermédiaire avant d'accéder à la nef (intérieur). Il peut être au devant du portail, ou entre le portail et la nef (Vézelay).
Il était prévu pour accueillir les catéchumènes se préparant au baptême.

En Arménie, tous les monastères possèdent un narthex (en arménien : Gavit), bien particulier et mis en valeur.
