Les Ephéméridés (la famille des Ephemeridae) ne comprennent qu'un seul genre : Ephemera.
Le genre Ephemera ne comprend que trois espèces en Europe :
Une quatrième espèce, Ephemera linneata n'a pas été localisée en Europe pour l'instant.

Ces insectes sont très caractérisés par :
- leur très grande taille
- la présence de trois cerques
- des marbrures sur l'abdomen
- des ailes variant du blanchâtre au jaune
- des veines alaires très marquées
