Ebony, un magazine pour le marché afro-américain, a été créé à Chicago par John H. Johnson et est paru continuellement depuis l'automne 1945. Un magazine sœur de taille réduite , Jet, est aussi publié par les éditions Johnson Publishing [1].
La photo de couverture d'Ebony a depuis son lancement toujours été consacrée aux célébrités et politiciens Afro-Américains, tels que Dorothy Dandridge, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Carol Moseley Braun, Barack Obama, Zoe Saldana, Tyrese Gibson and Tyler Perry.
