Abel Meeropol (1903 - 1986) plus connu sous le pseudonyme Lewis Allan, est l'auteur de la chanson Strange Fruit brillamment popularisée par Billie Holidayet par le groupe pop AaRON.
Abel Meeropol était un enseignant juif d’origine russe vivant dans le Bronx et membre du parti communiste américain. Après avoir vu des photos du lynchage de Thomas Shipp et d’Abram Smith, il fut tellement choqué qu’il n’en dormit pas pendant quelque temps. Il écrivit alors le poème Bitter Fruit qu’il publia sous le pseudonyme de Lewis Allan dans le magazine « New York Teacher » et le journal communiste « New Masses ». Un peu plus tard, il mit le poème en musique. Celle-ci fut interprétée pour la première fois par l’épouse d’Abel Meeropol lors d’une réunion organisée par le syndicat des enseignants de New York.
Strange Fruit acquit une certaine popularité au sein de la gauche américaine. Barney Josephson, le propriétaire du Café International, entendit parler de l’œuvre et décida de présenter Abel Meeropol à Billie Holiday. Bien que Meeropol ait composé d’autres chansons par la suite, notamment un grand succès pour Frank Sinatra (The House I Live In), il resta très attaché à Strange Fruit. Il fut donc d’autant plus affecté lorsque Billie Holiday prétendit, dans son autobiographie, avoir écrit cette chanson avec son accompagnateur, le pianiste Sonny White.
Abel Meeropol adopta les enfants des époux Rosenberg, Ethel et Julius, après leur exécution.
