Ce stade de 30 936 places fut inauguré en 1855 pour le cricket puis le 29 décembre 1862 pour le football. Le record d’affluence est de 68 287 spectateurs le 15 février 1936 pour un match de FA Challenge Cup Sheffield United FC-Leeds United FC.
Le terrain fut équipé d’un système d'éclairage pour les matchs en nocturne en mars 1954.
