William (Billy) Stansbury Thompson (né le 1er décembre 1963 à Camden, New Jersey) est un ancien joueur américain de basket-ball de NBA. Il passa cinq ans aux Los Angeles Lakers, au Miami Heat et aux Golden State Warriors.
Thompson évolua au lycée "Camden"[1].
Thompson, ailier issu de l'université de Louisville et remporta lors de sa saison senior avec l'équipe des Cardinals le titre de championne NCAA en 1986. Il fut sélectionné au 19e rang de la draft 1986 par les Atlanta Hawks, mais fit partie d'un transfert le jour même de la draft l'envoyant aux Los Angeles Lakers, où il fut membre de l'équipe des Lakers double championne NBA en 1986-1987 et 1987-1988. Il fut ensuite libéré lors de la draft d'expansion 1988 et fut sélectionné par le Miami Heat, où il fut titulaire, inscrivant une moyenne de 10.8 points par match, puis 11.0 points lors de la saison 1989-1990. Suite à sa carrière NBA, Thompson joua en Israël pour l'Hapoel Jerusalem. Aux côtés de Adi Gordon, Thompson mena Hapoel à deux coupes d'Israël. Il jouera aussi à Fenerbahçe en Turquie.
Anecdote
Ayant remporté le titre NCAA lors de sa dernière année à Louisville en 1986 et un titre NBA avec les Los Angeles Lakers en 1987, Thompson est l'un des quatre joueurs de l'histoire du basket-ball à remporter le titre NCAA et le titre NBA consécutivement, les autres étant Bill Russell (université de San Francisco 1956, Boston Celtics 1957), Henry Bibby (UCLA 1972, New York Knicks 1973) et Magic Johnson (Michigan State 1979, Los Angeles Lakers 1980).
