Space Travel est l'un des tous premiers jeux vidéo. Il s'agit d'une simulation de voyage dans le système solaire. C'est le développement de ce jeu qui a conduit au développement du système d'exploitation UNIX[1][2][3].
Il est parfois confondu avec le jeu, bien plus populaire, Spacewar, qui fait également parti des plus anciens jeux vidéo. L'amalgame est compréhensible, étant donné les titres respectifs, mais elles sont deux œuvres totalement indépendantes[réf. nécessaire].
Histoire du développement
Le jeu fut originellement écrit en 1969 par Ken Thompson pour le système Multics, qui le porta ensuite sous le système GECOS en FORTRAN. Enfin un port fut réalisé par Thompson et Dennis Ritchie pour le PDP-7[4]. C'est dans ce processus de portage du jeu vers l'assembleur du PDP-7 qu'ils écrivirent le code sous-jacent qui en se développant finirait par donner le système d'exploitation UNIX original[3]. Pour cette raison, Space Travel est parfois considéré comme le premier programme applicatif UNIX.
