Ruby in Paradise est un film écrit, réalisé et édité par Victor Nuñez sorti en 1993. Il met en vedette Ashley Judd, Todd Field, Bentley Mitchum, Allison Dean et Dorothy Lyman. Il est un hommage à l’œuvre Northanger Abbey de Jane Austen[1].

Ruby (Judd) quitte le Tennessee pour Panama City (Floride), siège d'un camp d'été qu'elle a visité enfant. Arrivée à l'automne, elle décroche un emploi chez Chambers Beach Emporium, un boutique de souvenirs tenue par Mrs. Chambers (Lyman), malgré le rejet préalable de sa candidature par le propriétaire. Au cours de l'année, elle tient un journal (duquel elle fait la narration durant le film) où elle philosophe sur les événements.

Réception
Le film reçoit des critiques positives. Roger Ebert le met dans sa liste des dix films de l'année.
Prix et distinctions
Le film gagne, conjointement avec Public Access, le Prix du Grand Jury pour un drame au Festival de Sundance en 1993. Judd remporte un Independent Spirit Award en tant que meilleure actrice.
