Papa et Rangi étroitement enlacés
Dans la mythologie māori, le couple premier Rangi et Papa (ou Ranginui et Papatuanuku) apparaît dans le mythe de la création, expliquant les origines du monde[1]. D'autres mythologies peuvent remplacer le nom de Rangi par un autre nom, tel que Atea, Wākea, et Vatea.
Union et séparation
Rangi et Papa sont les parents primordiaux de Tani et Oma, le père ciel et la mère terre qui reposent ensemble, étroitement unis. Ils ont beaucoup d'enfants[2], tous mâles, contraints de vivre dans l'étroitesse de l'obscurité qui les sépare.

- ↑ Cet article est largement fondé sur les écrits d'un chef Te Arawa, Wiremu Maihi Te Rangikāheke, auteur d'une grande partie de la matière première du Nga Mahi a nga Tupuna de George Grey, originellement publié en 1854 et plus tard traduit en anglais comme "mythologie polynésienne" (Grey, 1956). Il est donc compris que la version présentée ici ne représente qu'un mythe de la création māori parmi de nombreuses variantes.
