Fonctionnement

Lancé en 2005 par le créateur de MP3.com, Michael Robertson, le site permet aux utilisateurs d'avoir accès à un espace de stockage illimité et gratuit sur lequel ils peuvent "downloader" et "uploader" des fichiers musicaux sur les serveurs du site appelé "Obeo". Une synchronisation automatique s’effectuera à l'aide d'un logiciel permettant l’écoute en streaming de ses fichiers situés sur Obeo[1].

Polémique

L'industrie musicale a pointé du doigt le site lui reprochant de favoriser l'écoute de fichiers pirates (sans droits d'auteurs). Le site a indiqué ne pas être responsable du contenu utilisé par ses utilisateurs.

14 maisons de disques, dont EMI, ont porté plainte contre le site en 2008 pour utilisation illégale de leurs chansons. Le 23 août 2011, la justice américaine a innocenté MP3Tunes déclarant le site non responsable du contenu des fichiers hébergés sur leurs serveurs[2].
