Kate Webster (1849-1879), célèbre pour avoir assassinée sa maîtresse, est une criminelle anglaise du XIXe siècle. Son crime (le seul) fut perpétré en 1878, lorsqu'elle avait 29 ans. Le "Mystère de Barnes" fut élucidé 132 ans plus tard, en 2011[1].
Le meurtre
Kate Webster avait pour maîtresse Julia Thomas, une riche veuve cinquantenaire habitant Richmond dans la banlieue de Londres. Après avoir poussée celle-ci dans l'escalier et l'avoir étranglée, Kate Webster la coupa à la hache en partie. Elle la cuisina et la donna à manger aux enfants qu'elle avait en garde. Après cet assassinat, Kate Webster usurpa l'identité de sa victime.
Le procès
Un an après son meurtre, Kate Webster est condamnée à la peine capitale et meurt en 1879, à 30 ans.
