Houston Person est un saxophoniste ténor de jazz américain né à Florence, Caroline du Sud le 10 novembre 1934. Pendant son service militaire, il a l'occasion de rencontrer en Allemagne Don Ellis, Leo Wright, Cedar Walton et Eddie Harris et de jouer avec eux. Puis, au milieu des années 60, il est engagé par l'organiste Johnny "Hammond" Smith avec lequel il commence à enregistrer pour Prestige. Il quitte ensuite Smith pour diriger son groupe, un trio avec orgue qui comprendra Sonny Phillips et le batteur Frankie Jones. Avec son trio, Person enregistre toute une série d'albums pour Prestige. La chanteuse Etta Jones rejoint le trio au début des années 70 et se produira avec Person jusqu'à sa mort (2001), le groupe enregistrant à partir de 1976 successivement pour les labels Muse, Savant et High Note du producteur Joe Fields.

Houston Person s'est inspiré à ses débuts de Gene Ammons. Il a une sonorité volumineuse, pleine de chaleur.
