Hatfield and the North est un groupe de rock progressif de l'École de Canterbury.
Issus du groupe des The Wilde Flowers (en) fondé en 1963, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, les frères Hastings, David Sinclair et Richard Coughlan donnent naissance à Soft Machine d'une part et à Caravan d'autre part. De cette filiation naît en 1973 Hatfield And The North. Pip Pyle, ex Gong occupe la batterie, Richard Sinclair (Caravan) à la basse et au chant, Phil Miller (en) à la guitare et Dave Stewart, ex Egg (en), aux claviers. Participation de Robert Wyatt au chant, Geoff Leigh (en) d'Henry Cow aux sax & flûte.
