En médecine ou en statistique, un gold standard se réfère à un test qui fait référence dans un domaine pour établir la validité d'un fait. Le gold standard a pour but d'être très fiable, mais ne l'est que rarement totalement.

Exemple

Si l'on veut évaluer l'efficacité de l'échographie pour diagnostiquer une appendicite et donc pour savoir si le test de l'échographie a une bonne spécificité et une bonne sensibilité, on compare les résultats de l'échographie (présence supposée ou non d'appendicite) à un test de référence qui va établir avec une forte fiabilité si oui ou non il y a appendicite, le test de référence pourrait être dans ce cas là l'analyse de la biopsie de l'appendice.
